Yesterday was the beginning of Ramadan in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I just found an organization called Q++ Studio, the Source of World Public Holidays, which talks about religious holidays in Bosnia and how they are determined.
Religious Holidays: Public holidays in Bosnia and Herzegovina that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or just because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck).
There is even a disclaimer on the bottom beginning with “in many parts of the world holidays are subject to arbitrary, last minute changes by local authorities.”
I think that the site sums up the relationship between the Bosnian people and religion - superstition supercedes it, as do people’s opinions. (which is what “different religious authorities” ultimately are).
It is just another demonstration of the conundrum that is Bosnia.
